Level Five Finishing

Level Five Drywall Finishing in Clearwater & Tampa Bay

The smoothest, most demanding drywall finish available, built for high-gloss paint, accent lighting, and walls that can't hide a flaw.

What Level Five Finish Means

Drywall finishing is rated on a scale from level 0 to level 5. Most homes are finished to level 4, which is smooth enough for flat and eggshell paint. Level 5 adds a full skim coat of joint compound over the entire surface, not just the seams and screw heads, so the whole wall or ceiling has a completely uniform texture and surface. It's the standard used when the finish itself has to be flawless.

When Level Five Is Worth It

The Process

After the wall is taped and the standard coats of compound are applied and sanded, a thin skim coat is applied over the entire surface with a roller or trowel and knocked down smooth. This step gets sanded again and inspected under a work light before priming, since raking light during the process is what actually reveals any spots that still need attention.

Level Five vs. a Regular Finish

A standard finish is built to disappear under flat paint in normal lighting. Level five is built to disappear under any paint sheen, in any lighting. It takes more time and more material, which is why it's typically reserved for rooms where the extra step actually matters rather than applied to an entire house by default.

Pairing With New Installation or a Full Repair

Level five finishing is most common on new drywall installation in feature rooms, but it can also be applied to an existing wall during a larger repair or renovation. If you're planning a repaint with a higher-sheen paint and want to know whether your walls need this step first, reach out and we'll take a look.
